In 2008, 9th Ward Studios was formed, taking over the building which Independent Studios had occupied since 1977. As New Orleans “original” independent sound stage, Independent Studios, founded by “Little” Joe Catalanotto, hosted several local commercials (including Popeye's Fried Chicken) and catered to the talents of The Rolling Stones, AC/DC and the Neville Brothers.
Since 2008, 9th Ward Studios has been renovating and improving the studio space, which has been a part of such notable films as Red, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Killing Them Softly, The Power of Few, From the Rough and Man Down, as well as numerous commercials and music videos.
9th Ward Studios is located adjacent to New Orleans’ hip Bywater neighborhood, which now harbors easy access to some of the most charming New Orleans attractions and restaurants. It is also a convenient base of operations when filming in the French Quarter, Treme, Marigny, or Bywater. 9th ward studios offers a true New Orleans cinematic experience with the technological capabilities for any production. We invite you to come be a part of creating New Orleans movie magic with us. Let us help you make a classic.
